Comeniusproject 2010 Spain/Illescas - a diary
"Cultures of northern and southern Europe. English as lingua franca"
18th of September 2010, first day:
We met with the students at 6 a.m. at airport Schönefeld. Departure was at 7.35 a.m. and arrival at the airport of Madrid at 10.50 a.m. There we were picked up by the spanish teacher Maria Hernández , who took us with a bus to Illescas. We arrived there at 12.20. The spanish parents and students were already waiting. After a nice welcome every german student went with her/his spanish student to spent the afternoon and evening with her/his family.
19th of September 2010, second day:
The students spent the whole day with their spanish family. Some of them went to Madrid, other to an adventurepark. The teachers spent their day in Madrid to prepare the visit of Madrid with the students.
20th of September 2010, third day:
Meeting at school at 8.45. The headmaster welcomed us and led us through the school and showed us the computer room, music rooms, physic room an so on. After a short break the spanish students told us a lot of interesting facts about Illescas, Toledo and Madrid in a power point presentation. After that the spanish students presented us their self-made play in english, called "The crazy english class". At 12.30 all german students went with their spanish students to their regular lessons. The teachers visited a spanish and a english lesson. The afternoon was free to share it with the spanish family.
21st of September 2010, fourth day:
At 9 o'clock the mayor of Illescas welcomed us at the town hall and told us some historical facts about Illescas. After that we went to local radio station to give an interview. Three german and spanish students, the headmaster, Olga and Mrs. Fernández were asked question about the differences between german and spanish culture they didn´t know before the exchange. They talked about the projekt and how much they learned. One hour later we had a guided tour in english to the most interesting point of Illescas. After a two hour break for lunch, we went by bus to Esquivias to visit the house of Cervantes, the author of "Don Quichotte". German students didn´t know so much about this important novel and they got a summary, after that they enjoyed the visit more and one student became Don Quijote. To know spanish culture it is necessary to know Don Quijote. Students could understand better the plot because we have been in one house from the 16th century and they could see a real place which plays a important role in this novel. Then we went by bus to Carranque, where an archaeological museum is placed. There we visited very good saved Mosaics of a roman house and had a workshop how to create our own mosaic. They learned a lot about history in the place where history lives. They could see with their own eyes that romans have lived in Spain and that the spanish culture is like a mosaic.
22nd of September 2010, fifth day:
We met at 8.45 at school and left Illescas at 9 o'clock to go to Madrid. In Madrid we visited first the royal palace. The headmaster of the school of Illescas led us through the palace and told us a lot of interesting historical facts. Most of the students learn Spanish for two years. They learn the language and some facts about the spanish culture (restaurant, supermarket, introducing theirselves, buying clothes...) but they don´t know so much about Spains history. With this visit they could learn in situ a lot about the royal family in Spain. They saw objects from the 16th century, they admired the luxurious life of the spanish monarchie. They learn the importance of Philipp II for the spanish histoy. After that we visited the temple of Debod, which was donated by Egypt to Spain in 1970. They were very surprised that there was in the middle of the city an ancient tempel. One sign more for the interest of spanish people for foreign cultures. After lunch we went to the Prado Museum and had a guided tour to the most important paintings of El Greco, Goya and Velázquez. Here they could see that the kings had in Spain a very huge collection of important paintings so they noticed that Spain has been very important in the past. They learned some important dates in the spanish history. They knew Felipe IV and Carlos IV. They compared the way Velazquez and Goya painted the royal family. They saw paintings from the 14th century to the 19th century. At 6 p.m. we went back to Illescas.
23rd of September 2010, sixth day:
The first two hours the students had to spent in the regular lessons with their spanish students. They noticed the diferent way of teaching in Spain. They told us that the teacher explains a lot and the students listen to him and write or copy something from the board. Then the P.E. teacher started a few competitions in old spanish sporting games. The students worked together and it looked like they would always have been there. They understand each other very good. They notice, that there are some sportgames in Spain that also are played in Germany. In this way they feeled very united. They learned that there are also similarities between them. The students had to fight in groups with spanish and german students against each other. After that the students had to go to the last two regular lessons. The teachers visited a spanish and a english lesson. The afternoon was free to spent with the spanish families.
24th of September 2010, seventh day:
We started our excursion to Toledo at 9 o'clock. When we arrived we did a short bus tour around Toledo, to see the whole Toledo from the opposite of the river. After that we started a four hours long guided tour through Toledo. They learned the importance of this city for the spanish history. They learned that three different cultures have existed and lived in peace for a long time. They saw for the first time a synagoge in arabic style so that they noticed with their own eyes how mixed Spain was. They learn also that religion has a important place in the spanish culture. Isabel von Kastilien hat jewish and mosleem people vertrieben. They could see in the synagoge how jewish tombs have been used to give water to animals or to wash clothes. They learn that the christs put their churches where mezquitas have been and they learned that in the spanish history also there were problems with racisms and xenofobie. In Toledo they also saw the cathedral, here they saw that spanish people had a lot of gold from America. In the monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes they learned about Isabel and Ferdinand and in the mezquita del Cristo de la luz they could see the rests of the arabic culture. After lunch we went by a little train through the historical city. At 5 p.m. we left Toledo.
25th of September 2010, eighth day:
Free time to spent it with the spanish families. The students could spend time with their families to live like a spanish student. They noticed a lot of differences that they wouldn´t have seen if they wouldnt have lived there. They noticed that spanish families don´t separate rubbish, and they explained that in Germany they do and that this is very good for the environment. So they could show a different way of living. They also noticed that spanish people only take sweet things to have breakfast, that they eat twice a day warm food and a lot of meat with ketchup. They explained that in Germany most of the mothers have to work and they can´t cook twice a day. They learn one difference more. They also tried to convinced them not to take the car for a ten minutes walk. They told them to switch off everything what they are not using and tried to explain how important it is for our nature. It didn´t work so good but maybe the next time in Germany. Many students said they feel like at home and the spanish family is so goog like the german one. So They learn that Europe is like a big family.
26th of September 2010, ninth day:

27h of September 2010, tenth day:
The first two hours the students had to spent in the regular lessons with their spanish students. They have seen that their exchange students have computers for themselves to work at home and at the school. They also have technology, maths and P.E in english They learned also that there are also similarities between them. They learned about planets and orbits and made ellipes. The german group played a theater about two german children that meet two spanish children and they got friends. With this activity we wanted to show that there are a lot of differences between german and spanish people but they can be friends if they are patient and open for new experiences. The german students played it in spanish and the spanish students understand a lot. They learned for example that in Germany the lessons are shorter than in Spain but they have to be longer at the school. They learned that german people don´t switch on the tv if they don´t watch it. After that they went to two lessons more. The headmaster said good bye and we leaved at 5 to the airport. The children were very touched and cryed a lot. It was a great experience to see how they love each other after 10 days together.
